Working On Recipes
Brrr, it's -34°C outside today, so we decided to stay indoors and brew some beer in our basement. We have a 10 gallon electric homebrewing system in our house that allows us to test out new recipes, and tweak old ones in preparation for the opening of the brewery. Today we brewed a stout - something dark and roasty for the winter months in front of the wood stove.
Our equipment for the real brewery is a month overdue and is still being manufactured, but at least that allows us more time to tweak and improve our beer recipes. It's time to get serious! We've been playing with all variables - different yeast, malt, hops, temperatures, you name it.
We have two fermenters in our basement homebrewery, so that allows us to brew a new batch of beer about once each week. We've brewed 17 batches of beer in the past 18 weeks since the beginning of September 2014, when we first decided we would start a brewery. Now that's a lot of beer for 2 people! Thankfully our friends have come to our aid, and are willing to take the free beer off our hands, in return providing us with a lot of great feedback. We can't legally sell any beer yet, of course until the brewery is up and running and final approvals are in order, so you'll have to wait until the real brewery is up and running before you can get a sample yourself.
